You’ve Moved From a City to The Suburbs. Now What?

The transition might be harder than you’d expect.

A few months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, my family and I relocated from a city to the suburbs. We loved everything about the city we lived in, but as our family was growing, our two-bedroom apartment felt too tiny. Suburbia was calling.

Logical move

The move made sense. We would save a ton of money. We would be closer to family. We would have more space. A yard, even! We had a good feeling about it.

But when all came to all, the months after the move was incredibly hard. I am still thankful we left at the time we did, but that doesn’t mean it was easy.

We didn’t only leave a city we absolutely loved, we left a network of wonderful friends. We left a church. We left all the small daily city things just like getting a bagel on the go or taking a stroll with the skyline as your canvas. Just seeing people, everywhere. Seeing diversity.

A move can take an emotional toll and can also be very stressful. According to Health Status, moving is one of the top 5 stressful situations we experience in life. It is up there in the same ballpark as a job loss, divorce, major illness, and the death of a loved one.
